We Welcome You
Shomrei Israel was founded in 1962 to answer a need for a traditional synagogue in the area. Starting out in a room above Eli’s delicatessen on Oak Street, our founders relocated to our current address in the mid-1070’s.
Sometimes called the “Elm St. Shul” (because of our location on Elm St.), our congregation has grown considerably over the years but still retains the charm of a small, friendly, intimate shul.
Located in the heart of Chicago’s Near North Side and a short walking distance from Michigan Avenue and the area’s hotels, our synagogue has attracted Jews from the Gold Coast and Streeterville neighborhoods. The shul is a destination for visitors from all over the world.
We invite you to come and experience the special community and Lake Shore Drive Synagogue by attending our weekly Shabbat services or one of our many special events.
We ask that all guests fill out a security form by contacting the office at office@lsds70.org.
